Jeff Korbelik: Predictions for 2011 Emmy nominations
With Bryan Cranston not eligible for the Emmy Awards because of the "Breaking Bad" hiatus, we'll see a different winner this year for the first time in three years in the best actor category.
Will it be "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm or will Hugh Laurie of "House" finally break through and win his first statue?
The 2011 Emmy nominations will be announced Thursday morning. Fox will televise the 2011 Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 18.
The following are my predictions on who and what will receive nods. I'm usually pretty good at picking nominees. Winners, though, are a different story.
Drama: "Mad Men," "Boardwalk Empire," "The Good Wife," "The Walking Dead," "Dexter." Comment: "Mad Men" is a given. "Boardwalk" and "Good Wife" will be the trendy picks this year.
Drama actor: Kyle Chandler, "Friday Night Lights"; Hugh Laurie, "House"; Jon Hamm, "Mad Men"; Michael C. Hall, "Dexter"; Steve Buscemi, "Boardwalk Empire." Comment: Race is wide open with Cranston out. I give Hamm a slight edge.
Drama actress: Julianna Margulies, "The Good Wife"; Connie Britton, "Friday Night Lights"; Katey Segal, "Sons of Anarchy"; Elisabeth Moss, "Mad Men"; Kyra Sedgwick, "The Closer." Comment: If Margulies doesn't win this year, then the system is flawed.
Drama supporting actor: John Noble, "Fringe"; Peter Dinklage, "Game of Thrones"; Andre Braugher, "Men of a Certain Age"; Josh Charles, "The Good Wife"; Joel Kinnaman, "The Killing." Comment: Noble should be the front-runner even though Emmy voters aren't big on science fiction.
Drama supporting actress: Lisa Edelstein, "House"; Margo Martindale, "Justified"; Archie Panjabi, "The Good Wife"; Christina Hendricks, "Mad Men"; Kelly MacDonald, "Boardwalk Empire." Comment: Martindale was the best thing about "Justified's" stellar second season.
Comedy: "The Big Bang Theory," "Modern Family," "Cougar Town," "The Office," "The Big C." Comment: "Cougar Town" is my surprise pick over "Glee" for a nomination.
Comedy actor: Steve Carell, "The Office"; Jim Parsons, "The Big Bang Theory"; Louis C.K., "Louie"; Alec Baldwin, "30 Rock"; Zachary Levi, "Chuck." Comment: Will sentimental choice Carell beat Parsons this year?
Comedy actress: Laura Linney, "The Big C"; Amy Poehler, "Parks and Recreation"; Tina Fey, "30 Rock"; Toni Collette, "United States of Tara"; Edie Falco, "Nurse Jackie." Comment: Linney is my early choice to win.
Comedy supporting actor: Ty Burrell, "Modern Family"; Neil Patrick Harris, "How I Met Your Mother"; Nick Offerman, "Parks and Recreation"; Eric Stonestreet, "Modern Family"; Jon Cryer, "Two and Half Men." Comment: I hope I'm not the only one to notice how good Offerman was this season.
Comedy supporting actress: Busy Philipps, "Cougar Town"; Julie Bowen, "Modern Family"; Sofia Vergara, "Modern Family"; Cobie Smulders, "How I Met Your Mother"; Betty White, "Hot in Cleveland." Comment: Philipps will be a safe bet for a nomination and a win. But how fun would it be to hear White give an acceptance speech?
